47. THE FIVE
LAWRENCE BROTHERS
By an unknown photographer, 1910
This is the last known photograph of all five brothers together. It shows, from left to
right, Ned, Frank, Arnold, Bob and Will.
Frank Lawrence was still at the City of Oxford High School. He would follow Ned to
Jesus College, Oxford. He was killed in action in 1915.
Arnold Lawrence, also at the City of Oxford High School, would develop an interest in
archaeology. He later went to New College, Oxford and became Professor of Classical
Archaeology at Cambridge. As T. E. Lawrences heir and literary executor he
contributed introductions to Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1935), Crusader Castles
(1936), Secret Despatches from Arabia (1939) and The Mint (1955). He also
edited two collections of Lawrences minor writings: Oriental Assembly (1939)
and Men in Print (1940) as well as T. E. Lawrence by his Friends (1937) and Letters
to T. E. Lawrence (1962). He died in 1991.
Bob Lawrence had studied medicine at St John's college, Oxford. He was to serve as a
doctor with British forces on the Western Front during the First World War and later
became a medical missionary in China, where he was accompanied by his mother. He later
edited The Home Letters of T. E. Lawrence and his Brothers (1954) which contains
letters home from Ned, Will and Frank Lawrence. He died in 1971.
Will Lawrence was at St. John's College, Oxford, and later worked as a teacher in
India. He was only a year younger than Ned, and the two had many interests in common. In
particular he shared his brother's enthusiasm for literature and writers. While Ned came
to know James Elroy Flecker in Syria, Will became friends with Ezra Pound. He was killed
in action in 1915.
