42. B.A. THESIS, THE INFLUENCE OF THE CRUSADES ON EUROPEAN MILITARY ARCHITECTURE - TO THE END OF THE XIIth CENTURY

(not illustrated)

By T. E. Lawrence, 1910

This is the copy of Lawrence's undergraduate thesis submitted to the Examiners in March 1910. For a time, Lawrence intended to enlarge the thesis and have it published as a book; with this in mind he began to make extensive marginal annotations. It was found, however, that the cost of reproducing all his maps and illustrations would be prohibitive.

The thesis was published in a limited edition in 1936 under the title Crusader Castles. In 1988 a new edition, edited by Denys Pringle, was published by Oxford University Press.

Lawrence's second typed copy of the thesis, which also has marginal annotations, is now at the Houghton Library, Harvard.

Principal and Fellows, Jesus College, Oxford

Paper bound typescript with MS annotations and photographs, 26.5 x 20.5

Provenance: Given by Sarah Lawrence.
