18. THE FIVE LAWRENCE BROTHERS IN THE GARDEN OF 2 POLSTEAD ROAD, OXFORD

Photograph by ? Thomas Lawrence (1902)

In the Lawrence family physical fitness was considered to be important. Sarah Lawrence later recalled that when they lived in France Ned was sent three times a week to a gymnastics class in St Malo. This photograph, taken at 2 Polstead Road during the summer of 1902, shows that the garden was equipped with a set of parallel bars. The baby in Ned Lawrence's arms is probably his youngest brother Arnold Walter, born at Oxford in 1900. The other children shown are (left to right): Frank, Will, and Bob.

The photograph was sent by Sarah Lawrence to the Chaignons, the French family who had been their landlords in Dinard. The two families continued to correspond with each other for several years. In 1906 Lawrence would stay with the Chaignons on the first of his holidays in France.
