School Photograph (1901)
T. W. Chaundy wrote in T. E. Lawrence by his Friends: 'At school the Lawrences
first began to impress my awakening consciousness by the regularity with which new members
of the family appeared, in seemingly inexhaustible supply: each in a dark blue-and-white
striped jersey that became almost a uniform, the softness of the wool matching a certain
gentleness of speech and fairness of face. Out of this prolonged family Lawrence ii
gradually became distinct by a spareness of body and a pithy energy of speech.'1
This 1901 photograph includes the four oldest Lawrence brothers. Ned, almost thirteen,
is in the fourth row from the back, fourth from the left; Bob is in the fifth row form the
front, fifth form the right; Will is at the left end of the second row from the front, and
Frank is at the left end of the front row. Bob is wearing a suit, but the other three are
wearing Breton striped jumpers. All four went on to Oxford University: Bob and Will to St.
John's College, Ned and Frank to Jesus College.
