8. THE FOUR OLDEST LAWRENCE BROTHERS

By an unknown photographer (1893)

In 1893 the Lawrence family moved for some weeks from Dinard to Jersey, so that the child Sarah was expecting would be born outside France. In this way the baby, if a boy, would not be liable for French military service.

Frank Lawrence was, therefore, born at St Helier, and given 'Helier' as a middle name. Later, like his elder brother Ned, he would qualify for a closed Exhibition at Jesus College, Oxford. Whereas Ned took advantage of his Welsh birthplace, Frank was able to obtain an award reserved for candidates born in the Channel Islands.

The photograph shows (left) Montagu Robert Lawrence, born in Dublin in 1885; (centre top) William George Lawrence, in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, in 1889; (centre bottom) Frank Helier Lawrence, born in St. Helier, Jersey, in 1893; (right) Thomas Edward Lawrence, born in Tremadoc, Wales, in 1888.
