2.  SOUTH HILL, DELVIN, COUNTY WESTMEATH, IRELAND

By an unknown photographer

William Chapman, Lawrence's grandfather (1811-89), was the younger son of Sir Thomas Chapman of Killua (1756-1837), the 2nd Chapman baronet. William Chapman enjoyed considerable wealth and social standing and became High Sheriff of County Westmeath. He lived at South Hill in Delvin, and it was there that Lawrence's father, Thomas Chapman, grew up.

It was to this house that Lawrence's mother came, a generation later, as a governess to Thomas Chapman’s daughters.
